The art of writing is a highly esteemed artistic expression within the world of the Middle East. It is considered a fundamental characteristic of Islamic art and aesthetics and has been admired as such from the 7th century until today. The exhibition aims to familiarise the visitors with the evolution of calligraphic scripts, as well as demonstrating contemporary Iranian calligraphic art.

The first section is devoted to the history of calligraphy from the 9th to the 19th century as shown through books and inscribed objects from the collection of the Benaki Museum, as well as through manuscripts from the National Library of Greece which will be exhibited for the first time.

The second part of the exhibition focuses on contemporary calligraphy through the display of the creations of the Iranian calligrapher Mojtaba Sabzeh whose works with poetic and religious texts are introduced for the first time to a Greek audience. As part of the Athens 2018 World Book Capital
